At a time where the price of petrol has continued to get out of hand and we are all looking for that essential household saver, there is one excellent way of cutting the cost of transport costs. If you or your partner use your own car to transport you to and from work, and if there are other colleagues that live relatively close to you, you may well want to seriously consider the idea of car sharing.
In fact, this is something that could be practised far more often in this country than currently is. In Los Angeles, for example, they have specific lanes on their freeways that are entirely devoted to car pools - it is only permitted for people sharing a car to use these.
This is something that may be beneficial to the UK, but as our motorways do not tend to be as wide as those of LA, this may be a bit of a problem. Nevertheless, if this option is even a remote possibility to you, you must investigate it more thoroughly.
Approach your colleagues to find out how close they live to you. It is highly likely that they would want to pursue the same idea - if you are the first to bring the matter up - after all, in the dire economy of today, who does not want to save money?
The way this would work best would be for each of you to drive to work every other day and pick up and drop off your colleague. If you can get even more people involved: say three or four, this will work out to be even more cost effective for you all.
